outstanding annual achievements (AWARDS) Criteria

All student-athletes that competed in a sport at Semiahmoo are eligible for an athletic award if they meet the following requirements listed below, depending on each award. Student-athletes must be in good academic, athletic, and must not owe any outstanding fees (i.e. athletic fees) to be eligible for these awards. Most awards apart from the team awards are selected by the athletic department weeks prior to the awards presentation.

Team Awards
  • For team members who competed on their respective teams. These awards are selected by each teams coaching staff (eg. MVP, best defensive player, most improved, etc).

Athlete of the Year Awards (Male and Female - Grades 8-12)
All grades male and female are eligible for this award as long as they meet the following requirements:
  • Minimum of two sports.
  • A person who has contributed to the school through a positive attitude, service, sportsmanship, commitment, leadership, attendance, coachability and academic achievement.
  • Outstanding skills in the sports they compete in.
  • These students are selected by the athletic department.

Chad Collingwood Memorial Award
This award goes to a student from the Athletic Leadership (grade 10) class. It is awarded to the student who demonstrates leadership skills and is also involved in the athletic program of the school as a student-athlete.
  • Competes in at least one sport.
  • Does not necessarily have to be the most gifted athlete, but one who is committed, responsible, and hard working.
  • An athlete who puts in a lot of volunteer hours into the athletic department and who takes initiative and who may challenge and encourage others to follow suit.
  • Liked and respected by peers.
  • Enthusiastic and loved to play sports.
  • An athlete who is reliable/responsible on their team, a good role model, and displays good sportsmanship.
NOTE: Chad was a kid coaches loved to coach. He was a good athlete, not the best, but he was very good. He was a multi-sport athlete who loved to be involved. He was quick to offer to help – be it to set up or clean up.

Pigeon Mullard Award
  • This award is given out to honour a coach who has given countless years to the athletic department. This coach exemplifies what it means to help facilitate the growth of an athlete as players and individuals. This award is selected by the athletic department.

Fan of the Year Award
  • Recognition of a person who is always there to help out with organization, transportation, fundraising, and/or simply being a positive influence in the stands. This award is traditionally given to a parent/guardian of a student-athlete.

Senior Sportsmanship Award
  • This award goes to a senior student-athlete who displays all the qualities that a coach looks for on and off the field. This includes an athlete who plays hard and fair, a good role model, and shows respect for peers, coaches, officials, and the rules of the game.

Most Outstanding Senior Athlete Awards
  • For senior athletes in their respective sports that best exemplifies the best Semiahmoo has to offer. These athletes play the game at a high level but are still exemplifying sportsmanship in competition.

Golden Thunderbird Award
  • The Golden Thunderbird is awarded to a graduating student who best fits all the criteria that has been set forth in all the major awards. This individual will have gone beyond the call of duty during the past 5 years and has made an outstanding contribution to the athletic department and school community - on and off the playing field. This award is the most prestigious award given out at the athletic award ceremony and, if possible, is presented by the prior award winner (i.e. 2024 winner presents to 2025).
